Over Roster Issues

Hey All,

I'm seeing a lot of teams picking with guys posted on IL that aren't actually on hurt.  They can only be on IL if they are going to miss the start of the season.  You can't make a FA pick without cutting the IL person or adding them to your roster.  Otherwise your expanding your roster by stashing none injured players there to use a FA Pick.

Some examples:

Matt Boyd

Clay Holmes

Michael King

Nick Gordon

Aroldis Chapman

Mike Soroka

Same Issue with Season Ending IL:

They need to be on Preseason IL or roster unless they are out for all of 23'

Jake Eder and John Means are both back this year.

I'm seeing some of these are just mistakes on the spreadsheet and have been addressed by owners.  But a few need to be cleaned up.

And if you draft someone you should immediately add them to your roster. Because someone could draft who you cut.

Chapman wasn't resigned, I shouldn't be required to add anyone until I make a roster move or pick, which I haven't, and if there was an issue with Eder & Means it should have been brought to my attention when I addressed it before the prospect draft because I would have used a prospect pick on Eder. They're both recovering from TJ and chances are neither will throw meaningful innings this year.

I’ll let Chris to address the Season Ending DL and how it technically works.

And you are right. You don’t need to address roster until make a pick. This post wasn’t aimed at you. It was just meant to get clarity out there. Pirates may have drafted someone with. Healthy Matt Boyd on IL or Pirates cut him but the sheet doesn’t reflect that.

So we need to make sure of two things:

1. That the sheet is correct so players that are available don’t appear to be unavailable.

2. That no one goes over roster by stashing healthy played on the IL because they have to make an adjustment and the pick behind them should have all players available to them.

We may want to hit pause until clearing up the spreadsheet. 7 teams have picked and didn’t know Chapman was available. I’m not saying he would have been picked but the spreadsheet should clearly reflect who is available in the draft and who isn’t.

Steve's right. The way over roster league rules work is if you're over roster, you can leave the player stashed for as long as you want, you can make trades and add guys that way. But you can't call up protected prospects, you can't sign anyone in FA, and you can't add players to your roster via the FA draft. For example, my team has a few players that will probably be ready for the start of the season but are still stashed in preseason IL. But I have no FA picks and can't sign anyone in FA. That's the trade off. So if you do have players stashed in preseason IL that will for sure be ready by MLB opening day and you want to use your FA pick, you need to make space or make a trade.

I'm not going to have time to check the spreadsheet until Sunday morning so Steve is going to help me out and check for me. He can post if teams need to make space before their FA picks.

As far as Eder and Means, because it's possible they don't make it back from TJ this season, I told Justin I was fine with him leaving them on season ending IL. But once they're there, they can't be removed unless cut or traded.

Not sure how the rest of you guys feel about it, but it might be good to pause the draft and figure out if any team that's made FA picks so far has players in their preseason IL that will for sure be ready to play on MLB opening day
