TONIGHT: Deadline to propose rule changes

Tonight is also the deadline to propose rule changes. midnight east coast time / 9pm west coast time

I'd like to propose an exception (Nolan Schanuel rule) -- if a player is added to MLB roster during same season they are drafted, they need to be protected with some type of roster spot (I'm fine with a free prospect change or free FA addition). Otherwise, the player is exposed to Yahoo waivers as any normal FA.

As it worked out last year with Schanuel, a productive player in MLB was unprotected but also unavailable.  I don't think it would happen often, but first and foremost, this is an MLB fantasy league, and players at MLB level should all be either available or protected.

I second Joe’s recommendation.

i would only be okay with that if the team in question is given a free prospect change or signing to do it and also is given a reasonable period of time to make space either on the roster or on prospect list

since no one is planning for a June draftee to make the majors when you don't even know who is picked when setting our prospects by early March

sorry for multiple posts... i assume this would also have to go for intl signees too

The proposal only carves out an exception to our rule that players drafted in the current year's draft can not be claimed by other teams.  Has nothing to do with international signings.

Obviously we don't know who will be drafted, or who might even be called up to MLB in the same year, which is why I propose allowing that team to add them to prospects using a prospect change, or first right to claim via Yahoo waiver (at the appropriate FA signing price). If owning team doesn't choose to do that by the time the Yahoo waiver clears, then the player can be picked up by any team via FA. If owning team is out of prospect changes, you can still trade for one, or just claim via waiver.

Our current rule basically gives a team in this situation an extra protected prospect without using a prospect spot or roster spot. It also happens practically never, but it closes that loophole.

I think my proposal covers Ted's question on timing (through end of Yahoo waiver process) and method (use one of your prospect changes or claim via waiver at FA signing price).

Respectfully, I wouldn't be in favor of making a rule that says if your just drafted prospect makes it to the majors in the same season you have to protect them.

With the way things are right now, teams would get to carry an extra MLB prospect for free.

But the other side of that is, some genius like GM Arte Moreno decides to rush Nolan Schanuel, call him up. If my team isn't protecting him or adding him, I'm not using him or getting the benefit from him that I could. Yes, it's like having an extra protected prospect, but we all have extra protected prospects from the draft that we carry. Paul Skenes was like an extra prospect for Pirates. Blake Mitchell is an extra prospect for Royals.

I don't understand what difference it makes if the prospect makes it to the majors or is in the minors.

And also, I agree with Ted that I don't like how your draft prospect makes it to the majors and it can throw a wrench in your plans. Yes, teams could get a free prospect change to use, but you'd also have to create an open space in your protected list of 15. Or you'd have to open space on your Yahoo roster.

So thats my opinion on it.

But if anyone else wants to post support for it, we'll put it up for a vote.
